Smart integration of sensors with intuitive interfaces for both human and machine operators is a necessity in this rapidly developing era of marine autonomy. Demand for improving the safety of marine navigation is driving the need for these more complex systems. It is clear that simply adding more sensors to the bridge of a ship or the payload of a USV can have a detrimental effect by over-complicating the navigational picture and over-tasking the navigator.

In this online round table, we will discuss how diverse sensors, from radar and AIS to advanced imaging and 3D Forward Looking Sonar, integrate and work in concert to provide greater situational awareness of the marine environment in an easy to understand format. Simplicity and clarity of information are critical regardless of whether a vessel is crewed, minimally crewed, or uncrewed. The true value of integrating these systems is in robust decision support for bridge crews and vehicle control systems, ultimately enhancing safety, efficiency, and the future of autonomous operations.
