FarSounder's Dr. James H. Miller Co-authors New National Academy of Science's Report on Ocean Noise
We are pleased to announce that Dr. James H. Miller, Chairman and Chief Scientist of FarSounder, is co-author on a new report published by the National Academy of Sciences entitled Ocean Noise and Marine Mammals. In brief, this report notes that intense low frequency noise sources may be harmful to marine mammals. FarSounder's operational frequencies and source levels do not fall within the region thought to be harmful to marine life.
The subject of this work was approved by the Governing Board of the National Research Council, whose members are drawn from the councils of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering and the National Academy of Medicine. This work was supported by the National Oceanographic Partnership Program with funds from the Office of Naval Research, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Geological Survey.
