Environmental and marine life concerns are growing considerations within the maritime world. Using the FarSounder Sonar Systems can reduce the likelihood of high impact environmental disasters such as oil spills, reef groundings and whale strikes, and can provide a positive social impact in helping to safe guard the environment.

Protecting whales, manatees and other precious species are important and are often mandated by regulatory bodies. Charts and radar provide no protection from or for whales, which can severely damage a ship operating at speed, while also harming or killing the whale, many of which belong to endangered species. For example, ship strike is the largest cause of death for the endangered Right Whale.

Oil spills are by far the greatest economic hazard associated with marine accidents. Major oil spills, such as the Exxon Valdez spill, can cause long lasting environmental damage and billions of dollars in clean-up costs and fines levied on the carrier. The Valdez spill, with all the damage it caused, was only the 35th worst in terms of the volume of oil spilled.

"This technology could reduce the shipping community's environmental impact by helping to prevent oil spills caused by groundings and collisions... Additionally, the technology could also help reduce ship whale strikes, which is the leading cause of death for the endangered Right Whale." -Captain Robert Sheen, Vice President Operations, Ocean Shipholdings, Inc.
